One of the things I decided that I am going to do today is start watching Firefly and Serenity too, I am a bit worried that I won't like it because I don't like Star Trek but we shall see.
...I'm thinking that whole 'verse has reached its end.
The series has been shopped around to the various outlets at least once with no takers, and I'd tend to believe that the various network execs are a fairly homogenous bunch.
Besides the series touched on the controversial hot button issues that networks shy away from. Inara isn't exactly Miss Kitty, if you catch my drift.
Just this last Tuesday, there was an article on Slashdot talking about a BBC story about a SFX magazine poll asking people what the best Science Fiction movie of all time was, and they were very surprised that Star Wars only came in second, while Serenity came in first (by a factor of more than two to one).
Back in 1977, when Star Wars was first released, it was "the ultimate". We hadn't seen anything like it before. Not by a long shot.
In 2005, when SW III:ROTS comes out some eighteen years later, the audiences who are seeing the film are seeing it in the context of existing Lucas Films. They're familiar with ILM. It's not such a big deal.
Key portions of the plot have been leaked. We know the characters. We know the effects. People even have a good idea of how the effects were done! It's going to have much less of an impact.
Serenity comes along and it's got a differerent approach. It's "fresh". It's the opposite of Star Trek and Star Wars...
The one thing I don't understand is the lack of a backstory between Mal and Inara.
Inara comes out of nowhere telling Mal that she will be renting the shuttle at 25% BELOW market and Mal goes along with the program.
I can see where Mal would probably be totally oblivious to "companions", Inara included; but has Inara seen Mal in the past somewhere and decided to "chase" him?

In short, the audience is a bit jaded.
