Genuine Windows Advantage

My copy of Windows xp Pro told me that there was an available update that I sorely needed and would I like to download/install it now? I agreed.
The update was Windows Genuine Advantage. First, the update had to validate my copy of Windows. Then, it directed me to a website, which had to validate my copy of Windows. Then, it recommend I download Windows Media Player 11 and a few other helper programs. I clicked on the one for Windows Media Player 11, which sent me to a web page, which had to validate my copy of Windows. Then, I installed the program, which had to validate my copy of Windows.
Getting a bit anal, aren't we? I sure wish Microsoft would spend as much time worrying whether or not some ne'er-do-well could work a buffer overflow on my box.
